Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah is dedicated to helping children in Utah build brighter futures and great relationships. The nonprofit organization matches children with role models to start something special – a relationship built on friendship and trust.

According to the Big Brothers Big Sisters Utah, about one-third of Utah’s 300,000 children live below the poverty line, while one-fifth of that number live in inter-generational poverty. 44,000 Utah children have been separated from their parents due to incarceration. The leading cause of death for children ages 11-17 is a suicide, while 24,000 Utah children are at risk. In light of these findings, it is of utmost importance to take action to help these children.

What can Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah do for Your Child?

The nonprofit organization created a Youth Program in Utah to match youth ages 6 to 18, especially those from low-income, single-parent homes, with volunteer mentors.

The Process

The Child’s parent or guardian applies to have the Child matched with the right mentor. They must write an application and attend an interview. The organization screens potential mentors through an interview, background check, and home visit. The parents and the child meet with the potential mentor to confirm the parents and the Child.

The Next Steps

Typically, the youth meets with the mentor at least twice a month and participates in various activities, such as playing sports, cooking, and studying.

The goal of this youth program in Utah is to instill a positive attitude in the youth. The organization trains mentors to build a supportive friendship with the kid and change their character and behavior. The nonprofit organization has helped more than half a million youth in Utah.
