There is no better time to learn about the importance of inclusivity than during the days, weeks, or months set aside to celebrate and honor various communities. September 15th to October 15th is Hispanic Heritage Month.

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, we value inclusivity in mentorships. Through volunteer opportunities in Utah, we encourage mentors of all backgrounds to apply to become a mentor to a child on our waiting list.

What is Hispanic Heritage Month?

The United States observes Hispanic Heritage Month to honor the efforts and accomplishments of Hispanic American leaders who have motivated others to succeed. It is an opportunity for Littles to learn about Hispanic culture through exhibitions, movies, blogs, and more from the National Archives.

This period is intended for festivity, learning, and acknowledgment. Latino and Hispanic Americans’ heritage and achievements are honored this month. Festivals, rallies, and other events are planned during this time. Educational activities such as art exhibits highlight significant historical figures of Latin descent.

This month presents great volunteer opportunities in Utah with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah to bring knowledge and appreciation to the culture and contributions of the Hispanic and Latin American communities.

History of Hispanic Heritage Month

President Lyndon Johnson established the celebration in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week. President Ronald Reagan changed it to 1-month on August 17, 1988, after it was established in public law.

The 15th of September is noteworthy because it marks the anniversaries of the liberation and independence of Nicaragua, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and Guatemala. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence right after September 16th and 18th.
