Kids may, at times feel overwhelmed or stressed when it comes to their schoolwork. Whether it is homework, a project, writing a paper, or studying for a big test, lack of preparation and organization can leave kids feeling unmotivated and discouraged.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah offers volunteer opportunities in Utah for adults to become mentors to youth. As a mentor, you have an opportunity to support and encourage your Little who may be facing difficulties, including schoolwork. Here are 3 ways a Big can help a Little with schoolwork while creating positive academic habits.

Be Supportive

Show your Little that the skills learned in school are essential later in life. Show them how skills you learned in school are used in your job and in your everyday life. You can also explain how things they are learning could translate to what they want to do when they get older.

Discussing and familiarizing yourself with the homework with your Little can help them feel more comfortable and confident. Help your Little with homework problems they may not understand while discussing the key concepts of the assignment.

Organization is Key

An organized space helps children focus on their work and not be distracted by their surroundings.

If they have a designated homework spot, ensure it is well-lit, quiet, and away from distractions like the television or video games. They should also have all the materials they need within reach to avoid unnecessary interruptions.

Sit down with your Little and create a study schedule. A study schedule helps them organize their time and allows them to see how much time they need to complete their homework.

Encourage your Little to take breaks while completing multiple homework assignments so they can relax and recharge.

Find Ways to Make Homework Engaging

Find ways to make homework assignments fun and engaging. You can make homework fun by incorporating games and activities into the lesson. For example, if they are learning vocabulary words, they can play a game of Scrabble.

Goals are great motivators for your Little to help them stay on track. Choose a task or goal that is realistic and achievable. There are many ways to make homework more engaging for your child. Be creative and have fun with it! Praise their effort and achievements to encourage them to continue working hard.
