At Big Brothers Big Sisters, we provide a safe and flexible program for mentors and mentees to learn and grow together. The donations in Utah that we receive go toward creating these positive mentoring matches. The rest is up to the match itself. If you are a Big and need some ideas, we’ve to you covered.

Hobbies

The donations in Utah help us create local matches based partially on common interests. Find something that you are both interested in or are both willing to experiment with. This might be starting a collection, going to craft shows, playing musical instruments, painting rocks, model cars, knitting or even something as simple as board games.

Physical Activities

Physical activity can help you and your Little relieve stress. Go out for a game of soccer, football, or basketball, cannonball into the pool, try some weight lifting or new dance moves. You can even make chores like washing the car, chopping wood, or shoveling snow fun by doing it together.

Cultural Experiences

This doesn’t have to be anything extravagant. Just take an afternoon out on the town. Go see a movie or walk through a museum. Attend a play, athletic event or local festival.

Work Experiences

A really great way to help your Little see their potential is by helping them experience some of what goes on in the working world. Do practical things like changing the oil in your car or cleaning the house. Take your Little to work with you. Complete a resume, rehearse an interview or explore fun job opportunities based on their interests.

Academic

It doesn’t always have to be homework. Read a fun book together. Do a leaf collection, learn about another country or go get library cards together. With parental permission, you can even visit your Little during their school lunch break or take them to visit college campuses.

Indoor

Want something a little more low-key? Try doing a new hairstyle, finishing a puzzle or baking cookies. You can also try your hand at making bird feeders. Consider introducing each other to family members or visiting a nursing home.

Destinations

If you’re looking for a change of scenery, this is a great opportunity to spend time with your Little. Go to the fair, stop by a pet store for the fun of it, visit a local church, or plan a stargazing trip.

We hope that this has gotten the creative gears churning. Keep up the good work! We are always grateful for our Bigs and for the donations in Utah that make our local matches possible.
