Each April, Volunteer Appreciation Month is celebrated globally and throughout the United States to honor volunteers’ hard work and dedication. This month is a time to recognize, celebrate, and thank volunteers for their ongoing commitment and invaluable contributions to our communities. Organizations nationwide, including Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, celebrate National Volunteer Appreciation Month to recognize volunteers’ efforts this month and create awareness of the volunteer opportunities in Utah.

The History of National Volunteer Appreciation Month

National Volunteer Appreciation Month was first celebrated in 1943 in Canada to honor the efforts of women volunteers during World War II. On April 5th, 1988, United States President Ronald Reagan declared the first National Volunteer Week. He recognized the efforts of local and national volunteers who work to help those in need. Since then, this week has developed into a full month and is now celebrated in the United States of America and around the world.

During National Volunteer Appreciation Month, organizations across the country host events and activities to honor volunteers and recognize their contributions to the community. Events may include awards ceremonies, special recognition events, volunteer fairs, and social media campaigns. Organizations may also offer special discounts or incentives to volunteers during the month.

A BIG Thank You to Our Volunteers

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, we advocate the importance of mentors and volunteers in the lives of children and youth. Mentors provide invaluable support that helps children and youth to build confidence, self-esteem, and resilience. They also serve as role models, helping to provide guidance and perspective on important life events and decisions.

We have seen the positive impact of mentors who take up volunteer opportunities in Utah in helping children and youth to stay in school and make good decisions about their future. Through their mentorship program, volunteers help children and youth to improve academic performance, develop healthy relationships, build life skills, and make positive choices.

During this month, we recognize the importance of volunteers in positively influencing the lives of children and youth. Volunteers help to foster positive relationships and provide guidance, support, and encouragement. They provide a positive environment where a child can grow to reach their full potential.

How to Volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah

If you are interested in volunteer opportunities in Utah, BBBSU offers the following ways to help the organization:

  1. One-to-One Mentoring: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah offers volunteer opportunities in Utah to support a child in a one-to-one mentoring relationship. Volunteers must commit to meeting with their Little a few hours every month for a minimum of one year.
  2. Donate Clothes and Household Items: BBBSU accepts donations of gently used clothing and household items. Donations can be dropped off at BBBSU donation bins throughout Utah. For bin locations, visit https://bbbsu.org/donate-clothing/#find-a-bin
  3. Contribute Your Talents: From painters to yoga trainers, BBBSU welcomes volunteers who can contribute their skills and talents to host an activity for matches.
  4. Make a Financial Investment in Mentoring: Financial contributions to BBBSU help support our programs and ensure that children receive the mentoring they need to reach their full potential. A single match between a Big and a Little costs $1,800 to support per year.
  5. Support an Annual Fundraising Event: BBBSU holds three annual fundraising events: Bowl for Kids’ Sake in the Winter, Golf Fore Kids’ Sake in the Spring, and the Big Night Out gala in the Fall, where volunteers can take part by offering their support.
