Reduce, reuse, recycle are terms that go down history as effective ways of showing love for the environment. But, most people only think of plastic products and elements whenever the three words come into play.

Textiles rarely come into mind. Yet, this industry faces a massive generation, combustion, and discarding yearly due to the concept of fast fashion.

At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah, we accept clothing donations to help save the environment and help Utah’s youth.

Here are the top three reasons to consider recycling used clothes, shoes, and other textile products.

  1. Donations in Utah benefit others

Clothing donations in Utah help can help those that may be in need in a variety of ways. When you donate clothing in association with Big Brothers Big Sisters Utah, all proceeds go toward helping our one-to-one mentoring programs. Each of our mentoring programs is focused on helping Utah’s youth under the age of 18.

  1. Create relief for Landfills

According to the 2018 EPA statistics, up to 97% of textiles generated in 1960 ended up in landfills, compared to 66% in 2018. The numbers might be showing a significant improvement, but 66% is still high.

Offering clothing as donations in Utah reduces the tons of textiles in landfills yearly. That’s a great way to reduce pollution in the atmosphere and the textile wastes in lakes and rivers.

  1. Reduce the Production of Greenhouse Gases

Most textile products are manufactured using organic materials. Thus, they’re from natural materials, making them degradable. However, landfills lack sufficient oxygen responsible for safely breaking down the materials.

Thus, the textile products decompose through anaerobic digestion. This process leads to dangerous gases, which can cause significant health hazards.

Offering used textiles for donations in Utah is one of the best ways to ensure the clothing ends up in the right place.
