Announcement

Ready to make a child’s life better by becoming a Big? We have everything you need to get started!

Our Expectations

You do not require special skills, extensive resources or experience with children. Simply be compassionate, reliable and ready to share your time and be open to embracing differences. You must also be capable of establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries.

Many children face circumstances that diminish their chances of flourishing later in life. Our Littles face challenges such as:

  • 78% are experiencing poverty
  • 48% reside with a single parent and 9% with neither parent
  • 68% belong to racial or ethnic minority groups
  • 13% have a parent in prison

A strong mentoring relationship can mitigate these adversities and unlock a child’s potential. The interaction with a positive adult role model has been seen to broaden their perspective, expose them to new experiences and possibilities and encourage positive development.

Studies indicate that children who maintain these solid connections with their mentor experience significant, positive transformations within 12 months. That is why we require all Bigs to dedicate at least one year to their mentorship, volunteering six to eight hours per month.

Our Inclusivity Statement:

At BBBSU, we embrace individuals from all races, religions, genders, sexual orientations, countries of origin, ethnicities and abilities. EVERYONE is welcome.

Important Note

*Individuals with a DWI or DUI conviction in the last five years cannot volunteer as mentors in our programs.

We are always available to answer any questions, both individually and during the application process.
