At Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah a lot of thought and effort goes into how we pair kids with their mentors. The goal of one-on-one mentoring is to create meaningful relationships that empower kids between the ages of 6 and 18 to tap into their potential. In turn, the mentors themselves grow. This is what makes BBBS one of the most fulfilling volunteer opportunities in Utah.

Results

Studies show that kids who match with a Big Brother or Big Sister:

  • Have more confidence.
  • Are more likely to avoid drugs and alcohol
  • Perform better at school
  • Have better relationships with family and friends
  • Develop healthy self-esteem

Parents

We need parents from the beginning. Nothing happens until the Big Brother or Big Sister is approved by them and having their insight into a child’s strengths, interests, and needs helps us to create an effective mentor match to begin with. Throughout the process, we will continue to talk with you and your child about the mentoring process. We want to make sure that kids are able to have success in all areas of their lives, including school, hobbies, and relationships.

Safety

One of our topmost priorities is the safety of the children in our program. Before a match is created, we inform families on important things to know for keeping children safe. We also conduct a multi-level background check on each volunteer. We then partner with you in monitoring and supporting the mentoring relationship.

There are plenty of volunteer opportunities in Utah through BBBS. We have seen lives change for the better and you can become part of the story. Visit our website at bbsu.org and complete the online application.
