Mental health disorders can take a toll on youth, especially when they do not know where to get help. Big Brother Big Sisters of Utah offers volunteer opportunities in Utah that can help raise awareness about mental health in youth. Here are some signs of mental health struggles in young adults.

Insomnia

Insomnia in youth can be an underlying symptom of depression, anxiety, or stress related to mental health issues. The signs of insomnia may be difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep throughout the night, and waking up earlier than usual. Youth may also experience hypersomnia, a disorder where a person sleeps for long hours. Other insomnia symptoms may include nightmares or terrifying dreams that lead to anxiety.

Depression

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 4.1 million youths aged 15-17 have been diagnosed with depression. Depression is a mental health disorder that involves severe mood changes throughout the day and negative feelings. A child with depression may have trouble concentrating, feel nervous and experience restlessness at night. They may also avoid going to school, negatively affecting their academic performance.

Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety disorder, often called social phobia, is an anxiety disorder that can cause excessive fear and self-consciousness in social situations. Youth battling social phobia may have trouble making new friends, meeting new people, and attending social events. They are often afraid of being judged and criticized by others. Young adults battling social anxiety disorder often feel lonely, hopeless, and have a lack of energy or motivation.
