How to Become a Mentor

The Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Utah have one mission. To “to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.” When you volunteer to be a Big, you’re helping youth in your community. All by providing a positive role model that they can believe in.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters use “community-based mentoring that matches under-resourced youths with responsible adults in the community.” Studies have shown that mentored youths have better grades and better school attendance. When compared to unmentored youths in the same socio-economic class.

Donations in Utah

If you can volunteer your time, that’s amazing. But, donations in Utah of one-time or monthly gifts are just as helpful! Even your used clothing donations help to fund this program. The Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Utah ask that their volunteers commit to a minimum of one year of service to the communities’ youth.

Other donations in Utah are made in the form of clothing drives, where used clothing pickups are made, and the clothing is sold, with the profits going to fund the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Utah. These funds provide programs like site-based mentoring, which occurs in 15 different elementary schools across the state. The youth and their mentor meet after school, usually once per week for an hour, and they work on homework or engage in activities, typically on the school grounds.

To Wrap Up

The donations in Utah do make a difference in the community. Of the youths being supported currently by BBBSU, 76% live in poverty. 46% are from single-parent households, and 10% of the youths have a parent who is currently incarcerated. Join the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Utah in changing the lives of these youths. Volunteer your time as a Big Brother or Big Sister today, if you can.
