1. Clean Out Your Closet

What better way to kick off the new season than rejuvenating your closet and removing unused clothing? Allow others to stay warm this season by donating used clothing and bringing your Little along with you to show them the joy of giving. After donating, walk around with your Little and check out all the Halloween costumes and decorations. In addition to volunteers donating their time, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah’s youth and the environment benefit from used item donations and financial donations. All three types of contributions help kids with mentors get more out of their education, avoid risky behavior, gain confidence, and, as a whole, build a safer, cleaner environment for us all. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah partners with Savers- where money from sales goes towards supporting 350 Utah kids annually. Click here to find a donation bin near you.

  1. Volunteer at a Soup Kitchen

It’s getting chilly outside, and not everyone is fortunate enough to find refuge from the cold in their home. Take advantage of volunteer opportunities in Utah with your Little and volunteer at your local soup kitchen. Food and Care Coalition in Provo, Utah is eager to accept volunteers and suggests the following volunteer opportunities in addition to serving food: sing during meal time, host an arts & crafts hour, do an Eagle Scout project, decorate the facility for Halloween, conduct a drive for laundry supplies, play a musical instrument during a meal, and donate and assemble apartment kits. Most of these activities need to be approved beforehand by the Food and Care Coalition volunteer coordinator through email at  [email protected]

  1. Collect Colorful Leaves

Just as each connection between a Big and Little match is unique, no two leaves are the same. Go on a hike with your Little and find unique, vibrant fall leaves and create a scrapbook together of all the leaves you find. Fill the book with favorite Halloween movie quotes or fall aspirations.

  1. Apple Cider and a Spooky Book

Go to a nearby library with your Little, have them pick out some Halloween-themed children’s books, and then drive to a nearby park where you can take turns reading and have their imagination and Halloween awe go wild. Don’t forget to bring some heated apple cider!

  1. Rake a Neighbor’s Leaves- Make a Scarecrow

What better way of combining volunteer opportunities in Utah and having fun in the cold with your Little than offering to rake a neighbor’s leaves? After you and your Little rake the leaves, feel free to jump in them! Bring along an old pair of pants and flannel along with a pillowcase, and use the leaves to stuff the pillowcase to make a scarecrow
